Overview

 

The Billing Manager leads a team within the Firm’s U.S. Billing Operations, playing a key role in the effective execution of the Firm’s $1.5 billing U.S. billing function. This position is responsible for managing and developing individual contributors, optimizing workflows and ensuring sustained service and operational excellence.

 

Reporting to a senior manager and working closely with peer managers, the Billing Manager oversees daily operations, balances workloads and drives process efficiencies. The role also involves close collaboration with Firm partners to ensure exceptional client service. While a strong understanding of billing processes is beneficial, the primary focus of this role is leadership, service, process excellence and problem solving.

Responsibilities

Tactical Leadership

  • Leads a team of individual contributors, primarily billing analysts, in support of their assigned billing responsibilities
  • Fosters a high-performance culture emphasizing operational excellence and customer service
  • Supports strategic departmental initiatives
  • Drives team engagement and performance through mentorship, coaching and tactical leadership

Workload and Resource Management

  • Oversees team workload by assigning responsibilities, ensuring quality and timeliness and addressing issues
  • Directs daily, monthly and ad-hoc team priorities, ensuring timely completion and clear communication
  • Maintains efficient workflows and equitable task distribution while adapting to shifting workload, staff changes and operational demands
  • Develops team talent through training, mentorship and performance assessments 

Operational Excellence

  • Provides clear guidance and support, ensuring deadlines are consistently met and service standards are upheld
  • Continuously evaluates team practices, workflows and processes, identifying opportunities for improvement
  • Monitors team member performance against metrics and targets, providing feedback, coaching and developmental opportunities
  • Promotes a culture of accountability, innovation and continuous improvement

Stakeholder Management

  • Facilitates clear, timely communication between team members and partners to ensure strong collaboration and service
  • Serves as a key liaison between the Billing team and Firm leadership, providing insights and recommendations
  • Champions new process adoption and enhancements to existing processes

Qualifications

Education/Training/Certifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area strongly preferred.  An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree when the experience has been related to the functions of the role

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum of five years professional/relatable experience, required
  • Leadership experience, strongly preferred
  • Experience in a legal services environment, preferred

Technical Skills:

  • Extensive hands-on experience in legal billing, required
  • Proficiency in legal billing software required; experience with Aderant, preferred
  • Strong knowledge of legal electronic billing processes, preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, required

  • Performance of assigned team of individual contributors

  • Talent management, including transitioning staff and addressing performance issues

The typical pay scale for this position is between $123,800 and $163,800, although the actual wage or salary could be lower or higher if the candidate’s education, experience, skills and internal pay alignment are different from those specified.
